The Columbia Land Conservancy (CLC) welcomes you to Borden’s Pond in Chatham, NY.

This walking tour takes you along 1.5 miles of trails through the 62-acre conservation preserve. It is a mix of deciduous forest, seasonal wetlands, and old stream beds.

Borden Pond is named for the pond created by Borden’s Milk Company in the early twentieth century. In 1997, a group of citizens united to form Borden’s Park Preserve to protect the land. Through community fundraising and two major grants, the land was purchased and protected in 1998. In 2005, Borden’s Park Preserve transferred the property to the local land trust.

On the tour you will learn about the agricultural history of the property. How it was transformed from working fields into the nature preserve it is today. The stories associated with Borden Pond are the stories of this region’s history.

You will learn about the Hudson Valley ice harvesting industry, its effects on the land, and the ecology of the Berkshires and Green Mountains.

As you hike along the route, you will hear about the ecology you are passing through such as what birds to look for and the paths of the migratory monarch butterflies.
