Welcome to the audio tour of the Helmut & Candis Stern Preserve at Mt. Baldy! This 1,730-acre preserve provides a stunning bird’s-eye view of the beauty of the Keweenaw Peninsula.

Mt. Baldy, also known as Lookout Mountain, features spectacular views and one of Michigan’s best examples of northern balds, a unique rocky habitat found at higher elevations. From cedar-forested wetlands, to a 230-foot cliff, to migratory raptors, there is much to see and appreciate at this stunning preserve.

This hike is one of the most strenuous hikes on any of The Nature Conservancy’s preserves in Michigan. About six-and-a-half miles round trip, it will take you to the very top of Mt. Baldy and back, so allow at least three hours for your visit. Along the way, you'll hear interesting facts and things to look out for on “Lookout Mountain.”

If you are on location, you are within the Eagle Harbor township boundary. When The Nature Conservancy acquired the preserve in 2001, the township graciously provided this parking area and access to the trail. The preserve continues to be an asset to the local community. For example, it provides Michigan Tech students with an “outdoor laboratory” to study geology and other subjects. The region is also part of the traditional homelands of the Ojibwe and other Anishinaabe peoples.

This Michigan preserve is owned and managed by The Nature Conservancy. It was first protected in 2001 and kept as a preserve thanks to the Sterns. The preserve is named after them to recognize their generosity.
