The nonprofit land trust, the
Columbia Land Conservancy (CLC), welcomes you to the Harris Conservation Area in Austerlitz, NY.
This walking tour takes you along 1.9 miles of trails through a 76-acre conservation area. The trail passes through hemlock forests, rocky cliffs, and a stream. During the springtime, you will see woodland pools.
Harris Conservation Area is an excellent place for birdwatching, dog walking, hiking, and cross-country skiing in the winter. The trails are easy and filled with good views of the Berkshires, Green Mountains, and Taconic.
As you hike, you will learn about the natural and cultural history of this region. You will hear about how the seasonal woodland pools are essential habitat for breeding salamanders. As you walk, keep your eyes out for birds. The tour will help you to identify the scarlet tanager and the chestnut-sided warbler. The tour will tell stories information about the several species that live in the local bat caves.
